The 2010 PSUK Offshore Sailing Championships
The 2010 PSUK Offshore Sailing Championships finished on the 21st May, 2010. Twenty crews took to the water for this event, hosted by Kent Police in the Solent. Sunsail once again provided our fleet and David Nicholls was race officer supreme, aboard Alex Tullett’s lovely Hillyard, ‘Dawn Lady’.
Sussex skipper Graham Castell with his vessel ‘Ruby Tuesday’ played host to some of the Kent organisers while a charter vessel ‘Aristotle’ was also used by them. Freya Carter, SPOSC Vice-chair skippered ‘Emerald Star’ chartered from Commodore Yachting which provided a superb support service for the Sussex race boat, Sunsail 23, which was skippered by SPOSC Chairman, Steve Rigby.
Light airs dominated the week with high pressure maintained over the south of England. This tested the skills of the crews as every skipper sought to take advantage of every breath of wind and tidal variation. Jousting for position at the marks was frequently at close quarters.
The fleet visited a different harbour each evening, berthing at Port Hamble, Lymington Yacht Haven, Yarmouth and Cowes Yacht Haven. A presentation of trophies and dinner was held on Thursday evening at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. Kent’s sailing section chairman John Molloy hosted the evening which was attended by their Assistant Chief Constable, PSUK Chair Sara Thornton QPM honoured us once again with her presence and Libby Purves, author, journalist and radio presenter entertained those present with some tales of the sea.
In short, Kent did an excellent job of organising this year’s event and thanks should go to John Molloy, Roy Williams and skipper David Lavender for their efforts. The Metropolitan Police will be hosting the 2011 event which will again be held in the Solent between 8th and 13th May. For further details contact mpsc@hotmail.co.uk or the SPOSC committee.
